Dear Friends of Ewha,

Maybe you have heard the story of the little girl who visited a great cathedral with her grandmother one day. Quietly they walked about the sanctuary looking at the many beautiful stained glass windows while the grandmother explained to the girl each of the saints portrayed in the stained glass.

When the grandmother and granddaughter arrived home, the little girl was eager to tell her mother all about the saints she had seen in the cathedral. “Saints,” her mother said. “Do you know what a saint is?”

“Of course,” said the girl. “A saint is someone who lets the light show through!”

When I think of the history of the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University, I am aware there have been many saints who have let the light shine through. Beginning with Helen Kim and the first group of men and women who gathered to form the Foundation Board, there have been many who have brought light into the lives of the women of Ewha.

But saints are not just people in the past; there are saints in our midst today. They include YOU as you share your resources, time and expertise with the University and the women students there. Whenever you

• Give a gift for a scholarship to a Ewha student and for the library, you let the light of hope shine through.
• Make a contribution that helps to build a building, establish a new campus or restore part of the campus, you spread the light of new possibilities.
• Provide money for a faculty fellowship or sabbatical, you provide illumination that enhances faculty scholarship.

As you read the stories in this newsletter about other saints connected with Ewha, recall the saints you have known because of your relationship with Ewha—people who have brought light into the darkness that often frustrates or impedes the educational processes of Ewha Womans University. Join with me in giving thanks for those saints. And then become a “saint” yourself as you continue to pray for, give thanks, and support this wonderful university and its students.

Let your light shine! And please help others to know light and life through your contributions to the International Foundation.

사랑하는 이화의 친구 여러분,

작은 소녀가 할머니와 대성당을 방문하였습니다. 성당의 스테인드 글래스는 아름다왔습니다.할머니는 스테인드글라스에 새겨진 성인들에 대해 하나하나 설명해주었습니다. 집에 돌아온 소녀는 신이 나서 엄마에게 자신이 본 성인들에 대해 설명하였습니다. 엄마가 물었습니다. “그래, 성인이 어떤 분들이라고 생각하니?” 소녀가 대답했습니다. “그야 물론 빛을 통과시켜 들어오게 해주는 사람들이지요!”

이화국제재단의 역사를 돌이켜보면, 수많은 성인들이 있었습니다. 이 분들은 자신들을 통해 빛이 밝혀지도록 만든 사람들입니다. 김활란 선생님을 시작하여 처음 국제재단을 이루기 위해 모인 사람들, 그들은 이화인의 삶에 빛을 비추어 준 사람들입니다.

그러나 성인들이 과거에만 존재하는 것은 아닙니다. 바로 여러분 역시 이화를 위해 가진 것을 나누고, 시간과 지혜를 나눌 때, 오늘의 성인이 되는 것입니다. 여러분이 이화의 학생들을 위해 장학금을 보낼 때 혹은 도서관을 도울 때, 여러분은 희망의 빛을 밝히는 사람들입니다. 건물을 짓거나, 캠퍼스 신축과 보수를 하도록 도울 때, 여러분은 새로운 가능성의 빛을 밝히는 사람들입니다. 교수진이 연구할 수 있도록 도울 때, 여러분은 교수들의 연구에 빛을 밝혀주는 사람들입니다.

이번 뉴스레터에는 이화를 밝힌 성인들이 소개됩니다. 여러분이 이화의 이름 아래 만난 성인들을 돌이켜 보십시오. 힘들고 어려운 시기를 밝게 비춰 준 사람들입니다. 그 성인들에게 감사를 드립시다. 그리도 우리도 성인이 되어 이 놀라운 대학과 학생들을 위해 기도하고 감사하며 후원하는 사람들이 됩시다.

여러분의 불을 밝히시기 바랍니다. 국제재단을 후원하며 여러분의 빛과 삶으로 다른 사람들을 도우시기 바랍니다. 우리 모두 오늘과 내일의 빛을 밝히는 사람들이 됩시다.
