SiEun Park, Scholarship recipient
“Hello! My name is SiEun Park, and I am one of the lucky students who have been chosen for the scholarship your are providing. I thank you a hundred times. The news I heard yesterday of getting this scholarship was like a drop of oasis water in the hot desert. I was that desperate... and grateful. I called my parents, who are still in Beijing (because of my father's business), and they were so thankful too. I am happy that I've lightened the financial burden on my parent's shoulders. With the $2,500 support, I can manage to pay the remainder of this semester's tuition with my savings! It is the last week of August, only days before the beginning of my last semester. Until yesterday my biggest concern was paying my tuition, but now I can happily prepare for my next semester without the stress I got every day because of the financial problem. Thank you again. I promise to make this scholarship you have decided to give me a worthy one.”

“As a freshman, I am trying hard to enjoy my campus live, do my best for the grade, and work some part-time jobs. The long vacation is almost over and the new term will get started next week... Since my family's circumstance is poor, I wondered a lot how I would be able to pay my tuition... I really appreciate your help... I know that it is not easy to give a great sum... I will study hard while always keeping your favors in mind.”

“I remember hearing countless number of people dying from Malaria daily when I was living in Africa, and I would never forget the dreadful moments in China when SARS took away the lives of so many people... I sincerely wish to take part in the world’s development of pharmacy. Where drugs are becoming more individualized, I believe there will be innumerable range of experiments to conduct and medicines to discover and develop. Using English and Chinese language skills, I’d like to be the one to develop the level of pharmacy in Korean, integrating various foreign pharmaceutical sciences with Korean pharmacy and contribute to world health improvement... As a member of ‘ba-da-ga-da”, a Ewha Pharmacy club, I have actively participated in publishing a booklet recording student’s events of the year and providing useful information to pharmacy students. For this year, I have volunteered for Wednesday service and choir piano accompaniment and teach elementary students. I feel I have learned so much from community service...”

Memorial Scholarship
“What would be the most meaningful work in the world? If someone asks me this question, I will answer that changing a person’s life positively would be most rewarding. There are so many aimless teenagers under the pressure of study, so I decided to be an aid for those students who are in difficulties in many ways - financially, mentally, and spiritually... as Christian, I have been involved in many community services. I have volunteered in WooSungWon with church people to take care of disabled people. Our job was to help them wash their face and clean their rooms. I also volunteered in HangLymWon to take care of deserted babies. These two experiences were valuable and I was able to develop the ability to look after others with love and kindness. To understand teenagers better, I served as a Sunday school teacher at Kwangsuck church for three years. When I was in Ewha University, I joined a club called CCC Campus Crusade for Christ). It helped me approach closer to God and look upon others through his eyes.”

“I have studied medicine for five years and I realized that the position of a doctor is not just a matter of prestige or high salary. Being a doctor means dealing with the fragility of life, so it is necessary to study longer and harder to acquire enough knowledge and skills. Merely a small mistake or technical blunder could harm the patient. Before entering medical school, I used to think the title “Doctor” translated into a stable and glorious career, but it has now taken on a different meaning to me... Moreover, a doctor should form a partnership with the patient, sharing his joys and sorrows. I want to be a good company for my patients, communicate with them and share their life experiences. A dictatorial or domineering doctor is outdated and clashes with modern attitudes. We need to take time and listen to patients carefully, sympathize with them and support them emotionally...”

McCreless Memorial Scholarship
“...When I was a junior in Ewha University, I worked on a project as a research assistant with some graduate students under a guidance of a professor. At that time, I was fascinated by the project. Analyzing economic situations and learning more abut difficult theories of economics made me develop. So I want to keep studying economics and become a researcher for helping Korean economy be stable and prosperous... I participated in community service since I was young and each experience is very special for me. When I was in high school, I made cotton candy with some friends and sold them at school. We donated the revenue to our school to help some poor students. I also joined a voluntary service group to make houses for the homeless. For the first time in my life, I held a big hammer and painted walls. The most unforgettable community service I did was working in an orphanage. When I first got there, I almost cried. Most of the children were handicapped and the situation was worse than I thought. We started with washing clothes and gave food to children. A young boy, sitting next to me, kept trying to give his portion of food to me. Not just this boy, but every child was offering their food to volunteers. Although they lived in adversity, they knew the importance of sharing. Through these children, I was inspired. They gave me hope.”

“There are so many families suffering economic problems. Because of economic destruction in a family, there are so may divorced people. My friend had family trouble since adolescence which resulted in mental conflicts. As a result, she has become a maladjusted person in society. I considered what I should do for my friend, but I found myself powerless. In the circumstance, I perceived the importance of family and became very conscious in Family Therapy... Twenty years ago, my father built a church in a poor neighborhood. From then on, he has tried to care for the church and engage in mission work. I have entered graduate school because I wanted to study more about family therapy. But the growing financial burden are limiting my decisions... During adolescence, I worked in a disabled health center, a post office and in city hall. In college, I read books to the blind in the blind health center and supported the youth festival I YWCA... for two weeks, I volunteered to help poor children in Philippines through my church. There were few education opportunities for children. Their only concern was their daily meal, and parents often forced them into harsh labor...”
